Developing your own style...
There is a fine line between being influenced by other people and blatantly biting their style. I see "McDomina's" popping up right and left stealing text and ideas from those who came before them and it makes me laugh. A McDomina is the term I use to describe simpletons who believe that a shiny outfit, a crop and a snarl is all you need to be a Mistress. They put their ego before education and can usually be found "training slaves" via Myspace. If you do not have the creativity to come up with your own verbiage and kinky rituals, what the hell makes you think you should be doing this professionally? Try data entry, since you obviously enjoy copying text. This is a job that requires constant creativity and tact, neither of which is demonstrated in a badly executed website with stolen words. Do these people not realize clients are going to notice when you take text from someone's site who has been around far longer than you? It is just silly.
Spanks and Veronica recently changed most of the text on their sites after a neophyte was so bold as to actually take text word for word in the gift and contact sections. I change my site around frequently to keep the ankle biters at bay. (I find that the best solution is constant evolution. It is hard to take on someone else's style when you are busy trying to catch up.) When you spend time educating people it is natural that they would develop similar ideas and it is natural that a fledgling Domina would look to other more established Mistress' sites for ideas. We all take things from our life and use them to develop our style and preferences. What I find pathetic is when someone takes another woman's rituals and desires on in a lie, in order to benefit financially. That woman muddies up the title of Professional Dominatrix by being nothing more than a bitchy hot topic clone with a couple of keys. You know who you are.
I was cruising around earlier today and found someone had ripped off the design of the logo I had done. It pissed me off to no end that some intellectually bankrupt jackass would take the look and feel of something that took me weeks to hash out for his own. I hope I do not find out that the artist helped them in that task, that would be very poor form. Oh sure, they changed enough to make it a different drawing but the colors, character and layout are the same. For shame! When that incurable case of anal itch hits you, know that I sent my incubus to visit.
I was going to take this opportunity to give some advise on developing your own style as a top. I decided it would be better to let the professional plagiarists of the world know that even if no one calls you on your bullshit, we notice.

Betka, you are so right on. ~finch
Betka, I totally admire you, and you're so right to post this... but what about those of us who want to learn? I am brand new to the lifestyle (and not afraid to admit it) where would you recomend a new Dominant go to learn the basics? I'm already looking up a local community, but what about while I'm waiting for that to start up?
lol@McDominas.
Stands and applauds........
over the years I have been stolen from so often, and most of the time they never changed a word just out right stole it.
Ugly little insta- dommes whom send men to the ER for sticking rice grains up their piss hole cuz some "teen Domina" told them to do so.....
Indeed we notice when they do this, and so does everyone else.
You indeed are the true Femme Domme, leading the pack, while they are just little dooormats, showing the world they are nothing but mere little followers.
Hats and bras off to you Miss betka I think you rock, oh and I mentioned your website just suck it site in My podcast I am about to put out. DO you mind?
Some little shit seems to think because I promote sexual empowerment for women, he has mistaken that for promiscuity and unsafe sex.
I had to set the little douche bag straight....
Well, well, well this topic brought everyone out of their caves now didn't it ;)
I was livid yesterday when I saw the logo in question. I have since done a little research and figured out it was indeed the artist who designed something similar. To add gas to the fire: I am almost positive it is the first drawing the little fucker sent me for my logo, before I reworked it. I guess that shows his creativity and talent come in moderation. As for the other business owner- they get a cocksucker badge for not having the cajones to say "hey that looks too much like XXX, can we do something more original?". I guess it is easier to ride my coat tails than do your own work.
"The toes you step on today may be the ass your kissing tomorrow" comes to mind. If you are reading this asshole take note, you are going to need me way before I need you.
Now for my peeps:
Miss Fran,
I still plan to do an article regarding this topic that I hope you find useful. In the mean time I would recommend doing some surfing in the links sections of websites you respect. I have a few resources listed here and far more on my home site. My main piece of advice for a novice Domme is read everything you can get your hands on, attend as many workshops or online discussions as you can (hosted by respected memebers of the community not "grand master such and such, king of AOL").
Mistress V- I know you can relate to exactly what I am talking about. The little parasites need to be exposed and ousted from our "community". Their thievery and misrepresentation makes it hard for clients to make a good decision finding someone they are compatible with. It also confuses the general public about the women who are drawn to this work. Thank you for mentioning Just Suck It Already.
Prople do tend to confuse being open minded about sexuality with promiscuity. I believe it is a defense mechanism for " I am not messed up because I have sex issues, your just a slut!" While I will bind and fondle a pretty girl in a New York minute, the people I tend to take on as lovers have generally been in my life for several years. I hope you gave that little guy what for in the podcast. I would love to talk with you about podcasting, I have been wanting to add some shows on here for awhile but an overwhelmed at the amount of software available. Ill drop you a line.
Pussycat- You are such a cutie pie. I'm not sure this was a very eloquent post but I appreciate the sentiment. Muah.
Well said! I am a young dominant Girl (aspiring pro-domme, currently foot specialist) and a big fan of yours. I find that one learns nothing from being a copycat, or a "Myspace Dom" haha. Anyway, just letting you know there are still some of us younger gals who want to learn this practise as an art, not as a way to sound cool or make money. We look up to You :)
Hi Lola,
I did not intend for my post to imply all women just starting out in this industry are ripping off others. I apologize if it sounded that way. I have helped many women over the years get started and expand their business and skills with ProBDSM. My issue is with people who do not have enough genuine interest and respect for what we are doing to take the time to develop their interests and skills naturally. ( Through their own experience and education.) It is a danger to the clients seeking a safe, sincere experience and it is a slap in the face to those of us who work diligently to educate ourselves and act professionally.
I appreciate the respectful note, but I don't want you to look up to me. I would rather you use my experiences to inspire and elevate your own.
good luck ;)
Betka
